Our solution to malnutrition

The Mathile Institute seeks to address the nutritional and educational needs of suffering children under the age of 6 in Central America to provide hope for children and their families.

When access and poverty stand in the way of providing basic nutritional needs, the results can be devastating.

  • Increased mortality and premature death

  • Impaired body and brain development

  • Increased severity and duration of diseases

  • Lower academic performance and test scores than healthy peers

  • Lower physical capacity and energy to work as functional adults

  • Substantially lower wages and productivity as adults

  • Increased risk and severity for diabetes and cardiovascular disease

Chispuditos® was developed by a multidisciplinary team of nutritionists, scientists, and nutrition caregivers to provide M+ Micronutrients(TM)—high quality vitamins and minerals—to malnourished children.

The corn and soy blend is a culturally accepted food, resulting in ease of use and high compliance. It's proven effective in reducing micronutrient deficiencies, stunting, anemia, and morbidities caused by common childhood illnesses.

The Mathile Institute distributes Chispuditos to children and families while educating them on healthy eating habits and ways to naturally incorporate it into the child’s diet.

The results are healthier mental and physical development, lower risk for disease, more participation and advancement in school—and a greater chance to survive and thrive.

Chispuditos helps improves growth.

For every month a stunted child suffering from malnutrition consumes Chispuditos, their odds of continued stunting decrease by 12%. Many of the children who received the product for at least three years are no longer stunted.

Chispuditos reduces anemia.

Children who consumed Chispuditos for three months were 70% less likely to suffer from anemia than children who consumed the "standard care cereal." The average hemoglobin levels of anemic children we see are 10.45 g/dl. However, after consuming Chispuditos for at least 10 months, their hemoglobin rose to normal levels: 12.30 g/dl.

Chispuditos improves morbidity rates.

Children who consumed Chispuditos for at least 10 months had a 61% reduction in frequency of diarrhea, and a 71% reduction in frequency of respiratory infections.

Chispuditos helps improve nutritional status.

We have observed higher nutritional status, including blood iron, folate, and vitamin B12 status, in children who have consumed Chispuditos for at least 10 months.

Chispuditos improves cognition.

Children who have attended our feeding programs perform better academically than same-aged peers. Preliminary analysis from a cohort study shows that children attending the Guatemala City Municipal Nurseries and consuming a daily dose of Chispuditos have higher scores in the areas of language, math, and abstract reasoning than their peers.
