NAME OF PROJECT: Changing Children’s Futures in Nicaragua
LOCATION: Departments of Nueva Segovia, Madriz, and Estelí.
An integrated education and nutrition program with M+ micronutrients in children from 3 to 6 years of age that attend more than 35 preschools in Nicaragua.
Changing Children’s Futures in Nicaragua is an integrated and comprehensive nutrition and education program began in early 2015. The Fundación Padre Fabretto, The Ministry of Education, and The Mathile Institute are key partners in the development and implementation of this comprehensive nutrition program. Parents, teachers and local community actors are extremely engaged and very strong supporters of this initiative. The program currently serves more than 800 children from 3 to 6 years of age that attend approximately 35 schools in three different departments in Northern Nicaragua (Estelí, Nueva Segovia and Madriz). Some schools are located in very challenging geographies, but our monitors are highly motivated in changing children’s lives and improving the education and nutrition of these underserved children and families. The children’s nutritional status has improved since the beginning of the program, and due to our success, other stakeholders from the community have become active participants by bringing expertise, aid in the construction of kitchens, storage and dining rooms at some of the most challenged schools, and gathering money to provide milk in some of the preschools. We are currently seeking other members to become involved and provide support and funding to continue and to expand this exceptional program.
